Signed on the title page by the Holy Gaon Rabbi Jacob Mozes Löwenstamm, son & successor of the Hoy Gaon Rabbi Saul Löwenstamm in his father’s lifetime ”I bought this Sefer in honor of my maker & creator for 12 b.. Ha”k Yakov Moshe Son of the Gaon Rabbi Saul Nr”y the Rabbi of Amsterdam”
Afterwards signs his son ”G-d gifted me with this Ha”k Yehie Aryeh L”.
The Holy Gaon Rabbi Ya’akov Moshe Löwenstamm (1744-1815) rabbi of Wilheln in the district of Posen and Amsterdam.
Son of the Holy Gaon Rabbi Saul of Amsterdam, author of "Binyan Shaul". When he was about 16 years old, he married his cousin, the daughter of his uncle Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Levin of Berlin, his father’s brother.
In 1772 he moved to serve in the Clive rabbinate near Amsterdam to assist his father in managing the affairs of the rabbinate in his old age. After his father’s death, the rabbinical seat of the Ashkenazi community in Amsterdam was vacant for three years (at the same time, the rabbi of the Sephardi community, the sage David Cohen d’Azevedo continued to serve until his death in 1792 ) and from the 1793 until his death he served as Rabbi of Amsterdam. His son-in-law Rabbi Shmuel Bernstein replaced him in this position.
From a (manuscript) eulogy we learn the magnitude of the admiration and appreciation Rabbi Ya’akov Moshe had in his community. The writer laments his passing: "… Our transgressions did this to us, causing the departure of our gaon and our glory, the crown of our heads, our good badge, the sanctified gem we had among us, our master, teacher and rabbi, the gaon, the holy luminary, whose name befit him, Ya’akov Moshe, son of the righteous and pious master, rabbi and teacher, the great gaon, who was the wonder of our generation, Shaul, Hash-m’s chosen one … the sun has set at midday, the joy of our hearts has been exiled in the day of our rejoicing, the day of our Purim [as he passed away on Shushan Purim] (גלה משוש לבנו ביום שמחתינו, ביום פורינו) became a day of mourning in our distress …"
His son the Holy Gaon Rabbi Yehiel Aryeh Leib Löwenstamm (-1807) Rabbi of Leeuwarden. He died young in the lifetime of his father, Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Rabbi of Amsterdam, and was buried in Amsterdam. His brother-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Bernstein, succeeded his father in the Amsterdam Rabbinate.
Overall Great condition, thick pages , stains, minor worming on lower margin of last four pages, new later binding. 25.5 Cm.
