The Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Freund was a disciple of the Baruch Taam and served as Rosh Av Beis Din and Dayan of Prague. He fought vigorously against the Enlightenment movement, and published various material on the matter.

Rabbi Shmuel authored many important sefarim, including Zerah Kodesh on the Mishnah, Kessem Paz on tractate Avos, as well as many others.
