The most famous Gaon Rabbi Alexander Sender Margolies Rabbi of Satanov (-1802), a leading Torah scholar in his times and teacher of most Galician sages in his generation. He was the primary teacher of his nephew Rabbi Efraim Zalman Margolies of Brody, and exchanged halachic responsa with the author of Ketzot HaChoshen and with the author of Yeshuot Yaakov.

The son of Rabbi Mordechai "Hassid", one of the savants of the Kloiz in Brody, a friend of the "Nodah Beyehuda" and a student of Rabbi Moshe Osterer. His grandfather, Rabbi Menachem Manish Margaliot, was the son of Rabbi Yitzchak Rabbah of Yavrov and the husband of Hinda, the daughter of Rabbi Alexander Sander Shur, the "Tavuot Shur".

His father died at the age of 22 and he grew up with his brother and sister in Brody with their uncle Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Loftiner. In his youth he studied at Clovis in Brody. He married Esther, daughter of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Buchner, rabbi of Zbarez, and son of Rabbi Shlomo, rabbi of Pintschov and author of the book "Yikhal Shlomo".
