Flyleaf with 3 line inscription written & signed by the Gaon Rabbi Binyamin Shlomo Zalman Spitzer.

The famous Gaon & Tzadik Rabbi Benyamin Shlomo Zalman Spitzer(1821-1894) was born in Ofen to his father, Rabbi Yaakov Dovid Halevi  who served as Rosh Beth Din there. He studied Torah from his father and later in the yeshiva of the Maharam Schick, the Av Beit Din of Chust. He was known as one of his outstanding students. He also studied Torah with Rabbi Meir Ash, the Av Beit Din of Ungvar & the Csav Sofer.

His teacher, the Csav Sofer, arranged his marriage to his sister Gitel daughter of the Chasam Sofer. Since 1852, he was the leader of the Pressburg community in Vienna..

From 1858 he served as a Dayan of the general community in Vienna, alongside the Av Beit Din, Rabbi Eliezer Halevi Horowitz. In 1872, he resigned from the general community after publishing a tract that required the separation of the pious from the community in Vienna. This was due to the decision of the community leaders who had given in to the reformers’ demand to change the order of prayer and omit mentioning Zion and Jerusalem. 389 rabbis signed the tract!

In 1874, he was appointed as Av Beit Din in Mattersdorf, but did not travel there to serve as a rabbi because his teacher, Maharam Schick, told him that his mission was to preserve authentic Judaism in Vienna. Therefore, he remained in Vienna until his death as the rabbi of the Charedi community "Adas Yisrael" in the synagogue "Shif Shull".

He passed away in 1894, & was buried in Pressburg, the resting place of his great father in law. Author of "Tikkun Shlomo".
